Woman convicted on 20 charges of stealing $38,000 from disabled people

August 11, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A volunteer who stole more than $38,000 abused the trust of vulnerable clients who thought of her like a sister, a judge said.

The budget advisory service worker, who has name suppression on medical grounds until sentencing, pleaded guilty to 20 charges in Masterton District Court on Tuesday.

One of her victims, Ron Warby, 84, said it was “despicable” that she betrayed the trust of the service’s clients, many of whom are disabled.

“It’s abuse – it’s terrible. I’ve done a lot of volunteering work, money-raising things, I’ve sold raffle tickets for arthritis. And I never, ever thought of putting that money in my pocket.”………

The judge convicted the woman on all the charges and remanded her on continued bail until October for sentencing, when her interim name suppression would lapse.

He said her lawyer, Jock Blathwayt, would need to provide compelling medical evidence for the suppression to continue beyond that.

‘Shambolic’ Companies Office worsens pain for ripped-off consumers, lobbists say

August 6, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A business can pretend its director lives in a toy library or MP’s office because the government’s companies watchdog lacks teeth, a lobby group says.

The Society for Promotion of Community Standards made a formal complaint to the Companies Office on Monday in the wake of a Dominion Post report on on Masterton photographer Jade Cvetkov  [link below] paying for a camera lens which never arrived, losing more than $3000 to camera accessory importer Pro1Digital Ltd.

“This story highlights the shambolic situation with Companies Office records,” said the Society’s executive director David Lane. [Read more…]

Michael Richard Smith – the fraudster with many last names – jailed for five years

July 31, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Michael Richard Smith, 41, also known as Michael Richard Weaver, Michael Richard Levertoff and Michael Richard Fresnell, has had name suppression for the last couple of years so the Herald hasn’t been able to write about him. He changed his surname to Smith in January, three months before he would begin his fight – which he would subsequently lose – against fraud charges… fraud totally about $700,000.
