Children’s Commissioner for England: pupils ‘raised on a diet of porn’

May 25, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A generation of children are developing permissive attitudes to sex and viewing women as objects after being raised on a “diet of pornography”, a major [British] study has found.

For the first time, the Children’s Commissioner for England has found a clear link between exposure to extreme images at a young age and a rise in “risky behaviours”.

It emerged that children who regularly viewed pornography were more likely to have underage sex, develop “casual and hedonistic” attitudes, experiment with drink and drugs and indulge in sexting – when compromising pictures are taken and passed on using camera phones.

Boys were much more likely to be exposed to porn than girls, it was revealed, resulting in “beliefs that women are sex objects”.

The study – based on a large-scale review of international evidence – also found some evidence of a relationship between explicit images and a rise in sexual aggression and harassment of the opposite sex.

Dr Maggie Atkinson, the Children’s Commissioner, warned that “violent and sadistic imagery” was readily available among “very young children” because of easy access to the internet on home computers, tablets and mobile phones.

It was claimed that many children aged just 10 upwards accidentally accessed “violent and sadistic imagery” while undertaking legitimate research.

“For years we have applied age restrictions to films at the cinema but now we are permitting access to far more troubling imagery via the internet,” she said.

“We do not fully understand the implications of this. It is a risky experiment to allow a generation of young people to be raised on a diet of pornography.”

The report called for the introduction of compulsory sex and relationships education in primary and secondary schools, including modules on the dangers of pornography.

It follows similar calls in recent weeks by the National Association of Head Teachers and Ofsted, which claimed that too many existing lessons were of poor quality.

Speaking at the launch of the report in central London, Sue Berelowitz, the Deputy Children’s Commissioner, also called on parents to avoid taking a “zero tolerance” attitude towards pornography, saying that the introduction of hard-line rules prevented children raising legitimate questions when they do access sexual images.

She added: “Some parents and carers simply will not take responsibility for discussing healthy relationships and sexual health with their children… Education is the only universal lever we have to ensure all children are safeguarded against the possible impact of pornography.”

The study – carried out by academics from the universities of Middlesex, Bedfordshire, Canterbury Christchurch and Kent – was based on an in-depth analysis of 276 pieces of international research assessing the link between children and pornography.

One UK study found that 80 per cent of young people believed watching porn “affected the way they had sex”.

It quoted other studies that found a relationship between explicit materials and “higher acceptance and engagement in sexually permissive behaviours” and “attitudes to sex that are casual and hedonistic rather than affectionate”.

It also found a link to under-age sex and the likelihood of smoking, consuming alcohol and taking drugs.

One Swedish study found a quarter of young people who “consumed pornography” had at least one sexually-transmitted infection, while a Dutch paper said: “Exposure to sexually explicit online films was significantly related to the belief that women are sex objects”.

The report also found a link between porn and “sexting”, when children take pictures of themselves and friends in explicit poses and pass them on via camera phones and social media.

This has been “argued to pose risks because the material can be used for bullying, maltreatment and exploitation”, the study said.

A Department for Education spokeswoman said: “Sex and relationship education is compulsory in maintained secondary schools – it is up to primary schools whether they teach SRE.

“We are strengthening the curriculum so that, from the age of five, children will be taught how to stay safe online. Schools can already teach children about the dangers of pornography provided all lessons are age-appropriate and follow the correct guidance.

“The UK Council for Child Internet Safety is already working with internet service providers to make it easier for parents to protect their children from harmful material online.”

“Scurrilous magazine Truth”: “chocker with sex adds” promoting “people trafficking” – says Peters

May 24, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

NZ First Leader Winston Peters has labelled Auckland “the supercity of sin”, highlighting its flourishing prostitution industry and “that scurrilous magazine Truth” with its many advertising links to the trafficking of sex workers.

“The Hong Kong born Chow brothers are thoughtfully providing a 15-storey brothel, in what used to be an historic building, just across the road from the casino in the heart of Auckland,” Peters said.

“And thanks to our generous student and worker visa schemes the Chow brothers will be able to provide genuine home-grown sex workers for the visitors if that’s what they want.”

He said “that scurrilous magazine Truth” was “chocker with sex ads” most based in Auckland. Many of the advertisements “in reality represent people trafficking”.

“The seven deadly sins were alive and well in Auckland and the city was being trashed economically, socially, physically and ethically,” he said.

Notes on Truth magazine:

On 25 February 2011 Truth Publications Ltd, formerly directed by Dermott Mallet and John Andrew Pin, was struck off the Register of Companies. It had earlier been put into liquidation on 21 October 2009 owing $622,000 to creditors, according to the Liquidator’s reports.  Dermott Malley and John Pin were both directors and indirect shareholders in Truth Publications Ltd.

See: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10606909

The scurrilous tabloid “NZ Truth”, which the failed company had published, made much of its money through advertising Adult Services (prostitution etc) and marketing hardcore porn linked to Steve Crow’s porn companies.

On 21 March 2011 the domain name NZXESCORTS.CO.NZ was registered with the New Zealand Domain Name Commission (DNC) by Dermott Malley. The registrant name was recorded as “Truth Publications Ltd” and Mr Malley recorded his name and the defunct company’s email as “registrant contact” and “administrative contact”. In early June 2011 the DNC was alerted to these false entries and the registrant was changed to Truth Weekender Ltd, with sole director Dermott Malley (contact details were corrected to comply with the law).

The registrant for the domain name NZESCORTS.CO.NZ and truth.co.nz is now Truth Media Network, P.O. Box 204367 Highbrook, Auckland 2161.

It would appear that the “scurrilous magazine Truth” continues to be closely linked to the prostitution industry, Dermott Malley, Steve Crow and his brother David Crow.

On 5 June 2011 The NZ Herald reported that Steve Crow, a banned company director, had announced a new business venture NZX Escorts.

“One week after pleading guilty to directing a company while banned, porn magnate Steve Crow has announced a new business venture. …

“He maintained his involvement as a “marketing consultant” in the new venture did not contravene his director ban. “I’m not running it. David Crow my brother is. He’s the CEO.”

Teachers should discuss porn to prepare children for adulthood says school watchdog

May 3, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The Daily Mail (2/05/13) reports: Secondary schools should prepare children for adulthood by focusing on pornography, sex abuse and homosexuality, the schools watchdog has said.

Too much time is being spent on the ‘mechanics’ of reproduction and not on ‘controversial issues’, according to Ofsted.

Children are being left at risk of exploitation and inappropriate behaviour because they are learning about contraception, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases but not ‘sexual content and the influence of pornography’.

Children need lessons on perils of pornography, say teachers

May 3, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The Guardian reports (26/03/13). Conference backs call for teacher training in giving lessons to help counter ‘dangerously unrealistic portrayals of sex’

Pupils should be given lessons on the potential consequences of exposure to pornography as a way of countering the “dangerously unrealistic portrayals of sex” that some are exposed to from an early age, a teachers’ conference has been told.

Helen Porter, a teacher from Newbury, Berkshire, told the Association of Teachers and Lecturers conference in Liverpool that existing sex and relationships classes should include elements on the potential dangers of sexually explicit material.

Delegates voted in favour of her call for teachers to be trained in giving age-appropriate lessons on the subject.

Porter said: “We believe that members need more guidance on how to deal with the many consequences of pupils’ exposure to pornography.”

Up to 90% of children aged eight to 16 had seen at least some online pornography, she told the delegates. “For many young people, pornography now precedes sex and many will have seen hundreds of strangers having sex before they have any sexual contact with another person.”

She added: “As educators, we must ensure that pornography does not become so normalised that youngsters expect it to be an unquestionable and significant experience of their daily lives.”

Why does liberal Iceland want to ban online pornography?

April 26, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The Economist Explains: Why does liberal Iceland want to ban online pornography?

ON THE face of it, Saudi Arabia and Iceland have little in common. In the World Economic Forum’s 2012 Global Gender Gap report, which compares progress towards sexual equality in 135 countries, Saudi Arabia ranked 131st while Iceland, a country with 322,000 citizens, topped the list. And yet Iceland’s proposal to outlaw online pornography places it in the company of Saudi Arabia, where women are not allowed to drive, to travel without a man’s permission and have restricted rights to vote. Why does liberal Iceland want to ban online pornography?

Iceland’s proposed ban can be seen as a continuation of earlier legislation to regulate the sex industry. In 2009 it introduced fines and prison terms for those who patronise prostitutes (though not the prostitutes themselves, which the law treats as victims). In 2010 it outlawed strip clubs. And distributing and selling pornography in Iceland has actually been illegal since 1869.

The main reason behind the proposed ban seems paradoxical: it is a result of Iceland being a highly liberal place. The country is run by the world’s only openly lesbian prime minister, while 65% of Icelandic children are born outside marriage (more than any other country in the OECD)
