Does watching porn really turn people into violent criminals? – The Telegraph

September 18, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Does porn make men and boys more likely to commit violent acts? It’s a question that psychologists and criminologists seem unable to answer, says Martin Daubney

Does pornography have the corrosive power to turn normal, everyday men into murderers or rapists?

It’s one of the most contentious questions of our time, and one that resurfaces every time a high-profile murder case hits the front pages where internet porn has cast its dark shadow over causality.

That happened again this week when Lord Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice, gave evidence to MPs, looking back on his conviction of “pervert” Jamie Reynolds, who murdered Georgia Williams, 17. The 23-year-old had been watching extreme pornography immediately before Georgia arrived at his home, where he proceeded to hang her in May 2013.

Lord Thomas said the case “left me in no doubt at all that the peddling of pornography on the internet had a dramatic effect on the individual.

“What is available to download and to see is simply horrific and it played a real part in the way in which this particular murder was carried out.”

Rapist ignored victim’s pleas to spare her and her unborn baby

September 18, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A Wellington woman tried to explain to a brutal rapist that she could be pregnant with her first child and begged him not to hurt her.

It did not matter to Bailey Meredith, 17, who violated her over and over during an attack on the Hutt River riverbank on June 11 before beating her unconscious.

She had been out walking when he had grabbed her from behind, ordering her to her knees before saying he intended to rape her….

The judge jailed Meredith for eight years but did not impose a minimum non-parole period.

Into the River ban was in ‘public interest’, Dr Don Mathieson

September 13, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Complete freedom of expression is impossible in a society that also allows censorship, says the man who has singlehandedly shut down sales of teen novel Into the River.

Don Mathieson, president of the Film and Literature Board of Review, said an interim restriction order – which makes it a crime to supply, display or distribute the award-winning book – was “in the public interest”.

“I’m just applying an act of Parliament … It’s impossible to have complete 100% freedom of expression and any form of censorship of written materials and that’s the tension we all have to live with and if anybody hasn’t got the brains to see that, then, I’m sorry . . . ”

Mathieson, speaking publicly for the first time since he issued his restriction order, said he had read Into the River“sufficiently recently to have a detailed knowledge of it”.

“I can’t comment on the merits of the book. It may have considerable merit and the board will decide whether it has or not. But the question is not how good of a bit of literature it is, but how does the act apply to it?”

His ruling remains in place until the next full meeting of the Review Board, scheduled for October 2. [Read more…]

How the Film and Literature Board of Review almost derailed the Film Festival–by Steven Price

Media Law Journal – 11 September 2015: Article by Steve Price – Specialist in Media Law

A fascinating read …..Steven writes that although his article was written 10 years ago he is “inclined to think it’s relevant to the current debate about [the classification of] Into the River.”
