Community Standards breached – Prison staff caught using work internet to view porn

February 13, 2012 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Prison staff caught using work internet to view porn. Dominion Post 14 February 2012

Corrections staff are using work computers to get porn and access high-profile prisoners’ details.

Despite the breaches, provided to The Dominion Post under the Official Information Act, none of the staff involved were fired and some – caught accessing high-profile prisoners’ files without authority – were not given official warnings.

Three staff got verbal warnings for accessing prisoners details, which they were not allowed to see. Five were given warnings for accessing sexually explicit and offensive material. Of those, two had been circulating pornography and other offensive material.

Corrections could not say what pornography had been viewed on staff computers but said all pornographic sites were blocked, meaning the offensive images would have been emailed in.

“Final written warnings were issued to three staff for viewing sexually explicit images,” a Corrections spokesman said. “The department’s web filter is designed to block access to pornographic websites – and other sites like Trade Me or for social networking – so the images tend to be sent to work computers via email.

“Often the images are embedded in the likes of Word or Excel documents that are picked up by our content filter once they are opened.

“Staff can be warned about accessing images that are deemed inappropriate or offensive, but may not be pornographic. Repeat breaches can result in written warnings and eventually dismissal.”

One staff member was given a verbal warning for using the department’s Integrated Offender Management System to “inappropriately” view records of high-profile prisoners out of curiosity. No records were altered.

Other staff members who did the same were not given warnings.

Two further written warnings were issued for staff using the internal computer system to look up information then acting on it inappropriately.

Corrections said they were minor breaches but, citing privacy reasons, would not elaborate.

“Thousands of our staff access the internet and our IOMS system every day for legitimate work purposes. With only eight breaches over the course of a year we believe the level of abuse is very low.

“There have been a small number of cases we deem serious and take immediate action.”

Peter Tomlinson, lawyer for double murderer Graeme Burton, said he did not know whether his client had records accessed inappropriately. However, the bigger problem was staff taking action on information obtained improperly. This could include using it to gain power over a prisoner, or releasing it to other prisoners, potentially exposing them to increased danger.

Community standards breached – Is the moral and spiritual welfare of our children at risk?

Unfit to Teach – the roll of Shame – Dominion Post 13 February. Story by Lane Nichols

Hundreds of teachers have criminal convictions and many are not fit to teach, newly released figures show.

Teachers have been investigated for sexual misconduct, violence, drug and alcohol abuse, incompetence, dishonesty and viewing pornography in the past two years.

The number of complaints has jumped by about half since the Teachers Council was set up in 2002 to vet teachers and independently investigate allegations of serious misconduct.

Of the 664 teachers whose behaviour triggered complaints since November 2009, nearly 300 were convicted of criminal offences.

Fourteen were struck off the Teachers Council register for serious code-of-conduct breaches or criminal offending. In total, nearly 50 teachers were stripped of their teaching licences in the past two years alone.

High-profile cases of misbehaving teachers include:

– A female teacher became pregnant with a 17-year-old high school pupil’s child after they put the school yearbook together.

–  A male teacher was caught with more than 200 pornographic images, including a videotape of his daughter and two foreign exchange students taking showers.

– Other cases include teachers viewing bestiality, committing theft, driving drunk and abusing illicit drugs.

Family First NZ repeats call for Law Changes to Prostitution Reform Act

February 12, 2012 by SPCS Leave a Comment

In its media release issued today, Family First NZ, a charity registered with the Charities Commission, is repeating its call for law changes to the Prostitution Reform Act in order to protect families and businesses from the unregulated activities of the sex industry.

Prostitution Law Harming Homes And Retailers

Family First NZ is repeating its call for law changes to the Prostitution Reform Act in order to protect families and businesses from the unregulated activities of the sex industry.

“The ongoing problems throughout the country have been highlighted by retailers and families in Manurewa being affected by the activities of prostitution, including half-naked prostitutes, used condoms, propositioning of family members, intimidation, noise and nuisance, and a general reduced sense of safety,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

“The fallout from the decriminalisation of prostitution has affected both residential areas and family shopping areas and the local councils have been powerless to act. There have been ongoing concerns about the negative effects of street prostitution and associated conduct in both the Manukau and Christchurch areas.”

“And accounts of home brothels (SOOB’s) where men willing to pay for sex are visiting nearby homes trying to find the brothel, and concerns about noise, traffic, and late-night visits are common experiences from having a brothel in a residential street or next to a school.”

In the poll of 1,000 people undertaken by Curia Market Research last year, 66% want brothels banned in residential areas, 26% disagreed, and the remainder (8%) were either unsure or refused to answer. More women than men wanted the ban. Respondents were also asked whether the law should be amended to ban street prostitution. 50% said yes, 33% said no, and a high 17% were unsure. Once again, more women than men were supportive of the proposed law change.

“New Zealanders are giving the government the green light to get the red light out of residential and family shopping areas,” says Mr McCoskrie.

“The association of prostitution with gang and criminal behaviour, alcohol and drug abuse, underage prostitution, and sexual abuse and violence means that we are sentencing more and more young people and prostitutes to an unacceptable situation,” says Mr McCoskrie.

Nudists Should Cover up For Sake of Families – says Family First NZ

January 31, 2012 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Family First NZ, a registered charity with the Charities Commission, is calling on the Tauranga District Council to follow the lead of the Kapiti Coast District Council and pass a bylaw outlawing public nudity on the coastline.  It is also calling on the government to amend the Crimes Act and Summary Offences Act so that the precedent to allow public nudity, set in past cases by liberal judges on events such as the ‘Boobs on Bikes’, can be overturned. Teens Conservative on Sex & Abortion Issues – Poll Results

January 8, 2012 by SPCS Leave a Comment

  • Family First NZ, a registered charity with the Charities Commission headed by Chief Executive Trevor Garrett, has today released the results of a Curia Market Research poll it commissioned into moral issues involving a survey of 600 15-21 year olds nationwide. In its media release, based on an analysis of the poll results, it attacks the views promulgated by three registered charities – Family Planning Association, and the two “gay” lobby groups Rainbow Youth and the NZ Aids Foundation. It also makes another call to the government to effect a law change that gives an unborn child the same human rights as any other human being.

Family First NZ states:

TEENS REJECT ‘SAFE SEX’ EDUCATION

SUPPORT PARENTAL NOTIFICATION AND ‘RIGHT TO LIFE’

A nationwide poll of 600 young people aged 15-21 poll has found that they hold conservative values on sex issues – which are significantly similar to the views of parents.

 SEX EDUCATION

When asked “Do you think sex education in schools should teach values, abstinence and consequences such as pregnancy, or just teach safe sex?” only 19% supported just the ‘safe sex’ message currently being taught in schools, with one in three (34%) wanting ‘values, abstinence, and consequences such as pregnancy’ taught instead, and a further 42% asking for a combination of both – especially amongst older teens. The support for just the ‘safe sex’ message dropped even lower for the older teens.

“This is a direct rebuke from young people to the ‘use a condom’ and ‘everyone’s doing it’ messages being pushed by groups like Family Planning, AIDS Foundation and Rainbow Youth,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

“Many parents were rightly horrified last year when details of what was being taught in schools under the guise of ‘sex education’ surfaced. Judging by the results of the current approach – which is a good place to start – sex education has been an utter failure. New Zealand has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the OECD, our STD rates are out of control and the number of teenage girls having abortions continues to rise.”

“For those youth who are sexually active, they are not being told the truth. Groups like the Family Planning Association and the AIDS Foundation are perpetuating the myth that as long as you use a condom, you can pretty well do what you like in terms of promiscuity, experimentation, and fringe behaviours – with little or no information on the physical or emotional ramifications or prevention of disease.”

In one example, a mixed class of boys and girls were asked by the AIDS Foundation if they had masturbated lately and were given condoms and strawberry-flavoured lubricant. They were also given a leaflet featuring graphic pictures, terms including “cock” and “wank”, and advice on the best condoms. Reports last year highlighted that children as young as 12 are being taught about oral sex and told it’s acceptable to play with a girl’s private parts as long as “she’s okay with it”. In other cases, 14-year-old girls are being taught how to put condoms on plastic penises, and one female teacher imitated the noises she made during orgasm to her class of 15-year-olds. One concerned father took his 12-year-old son out of a sex education class at his all-boy school after he came home upset about what had happened during one of the lessons. It included a question-and-answer session that focused on, “I have learned that my girlfriend has a thing called a clitoris. I really want to play with it. Is that okay?” The answer was: “Yes, if you ask her and she’s okay with it.”

A poll of parents in 2010 found that three out of four parents of young children want the abstinence message taught in sex education – with 69% of kiwis overall supporting the ‘wait’ message. [Read more…]
