Sex for rent: The seedy underbelly of NZ housing affordability crisis

May 20, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

As New Zealand house prices and rents continue to skyrocket, those in financially vulnerable situations are turning to prostitution.

New Zealand Union of Students’ Associations national president Rory McCourt said students facing financial hardship often turned to sex work in order to cover living costs.

International students were at the greatest risk, McCourt said.

And with rents in New Zealand up $25 a week over the year to April advertisements offering “free rent for services” are springing up across mainstream house-sharing sites.

An ad posted on Craigslist in Auckland offers a free bedroom in the suburb of Glen Eden in exchange for “sexual favours.”

Dave Henderson fails to stop liquidation bid

May 15, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The High Court has dismissed a bid by one of David Henderson’s companies now directed by his wife to stop liquidation proceedings.

Wellington accountant Robert Walker, the liquidator of several companies in the Henderson group, has started court action to liquidate Castlereagh Properties Ltd, of which Henderson was a shareholder until June 27, 2010.

The shares are now held by FTG Trustee Services Ltd, a company directed by Henderson’s wife Kristina Louise Buxton, but with the shareholding in Henderson’s name.

Henderson was bankrupted on November 29, 2010 and remains a bankrupt. Walker has also issued bankruptcy proceedings against Buxton.

She is the sole director of Castlereagh, which applied to the High Court at Christchurch last month to have the liquidation action stayed. Associate Judge Rob Osborne rejected the bid in a judgement this month. [Read more…]

Registered financial advisor stole $3 million from investors

May 14, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A financial adviser has pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $3 million in investor funds and shares.

Andrew Robinson, 42,  the principal of mortgage broking and insurance firm Strategic Planning Group, appeared in the High Court at Auckland on Wednesday morning where he pleaded guilty to four charges of theft by a personal in a special relationship, one of improperly dealing with funds and one charge of fraudulently using a document.

He pleaded guilty to stealing about $2.5 million of Strategic Planning Group investor funds, and three other counts of stealing $50,000 to $258,000 from four named people.

Robinson was a registered financial adviser until being stripped of this status when the Serious Fraud Office and Financial Markets Authority began investigating.

Between 2010 and 2012, Robinson used $3m in investor funds to pay for personal and business expenses or to repay other investors, and lied to investors when proving reports.

He was remanded in custody to a disputed facts hearing in June. Robinson and Mark Turnock, a co-director of Strategic Planning Group, also face charges brought by the FMA relating to making false statements.
