Children’s Commissioner for England: pupils ‘raised on a diet of porn’

May 25, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A generation of children are developing permissive attitudes to sex and viewing women as objects after being raised on a “diet of pornography”, a major [British] study has found.

For the first time, the Children’s Commissioner for England has found a clear link between exposure to extreme images at a young age and a rise in “risky behaviours”.

It emerged that children who regularly viewed pornography were more likely to have underage sex, develop “casual and hedonistic” attitudes, experiment with drink and drugs and indulge in sexting – when compromising pictures are taken and passed on using camera phones.

Boys were much more likely to be exposed to porn than girls, it was revealed, resulting in “beliefs that women are sex objects”.

The study – based on a large-scale review of international evidence – also found some evidence of a relationship between explicit images and a rise in sexual aggression and harassment of the opposite sex.

Dr Maggie Atkinson, the Children’s Commissioner, warned that “violent and sadistic imagery” was readily available among “very young children” because of easy access to the internet on home computers, tablets and mobile phones.

It was claimed that many children aged just 10 upwards accidentally accessed “violent and sadistic imagery” while undertaking legitimate research.

“For years we have applied age restrictions to films at the cinema but now we are permitting access to far more troubling imagery via the internet,” she said.

“We do not fully understand the implications of this. It is a risky experiment to allow a generation of young people to be raised on a diet of pornography.”

The report called for the introduction of compulsory sex and relationships education in primary and secondary schools, including modules on the dangers of pornography.

It follows similar calls in recent weeks by the National Association of Head Teachers and Ofsted, which claimed that too many existing lessons were of poor quality.

Speaking at the launch of the report in central London, Sue Berelowitz, the Deputy Children’s Commissioner, also called on parents to avoid taking a “zero tolerance” attitude towards pornography, saying that the introduction of hard-line rules prevented children raising legitimate questions when they do access sexual images.

She added: “Some parents and carers simply will not take responsibility for discussing healthy relationships and sexual health with their children… Education is the only universal lever we have to ensure all children are safeguarded against the possible impact of pornography.”

The study – carried out by academics from the universities of Middlesex, Bedfordshire, Canterbury Christchurch and Kent – was based on an in-depth analysis of 276 pieces of international research assessing the link between children and pornography.

One UK study found that 80 per cent of young people believed watching porn “affected the way they had sex”.

It quoted other studies that found a relationship between explicit materials and “higher acceptance and engagement in sexually permissive behaviours” and “attitudes to sex that are casual and hedonistic rather than affectionate”.

It also found a link to under-age sex and the likelihood of smoking, consuming alcohol and taking drugs.

One Swedish study found a quarter of young people who “consumed pornography” had at least one sexually-transmitted infection, while a Dutch paper said: “Exposure to sexually explicit online films was significantly related to the belief that women are sex objects”.

The report also found a link between porn and “sexting”, when children take pictures of themselves and friends in explicit poses and pass them on via camera phones and social media.

This has been “argued to pose risks because the material can be used for bullying, maltreatment and exploitation”, the study said.

A Department for Education spokeswoman said: “Sex and relationship education is compulsory in maintained secondary schools – it is up to primary schools whether they teach SRE.

“We are strengthening the curriculum so that, from the age of five, children will be taught how to stay safe online. Schools can already teach children about the dangers of pornography provided all lessons are age-appropriate and follow the correct guidance.

“The UK Council for Child Internet Safety is already working with internet service providers to make it easier for parents to protect their children from harmful material online.”

HIV, Hepatitis C, banned “gay” blood donors & defamatory claims of “homophobia”

May 4, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

In Australia, about 2,000 people currently living with HIV are also living with hepatitis C.

Figures from the New Zealand Ministry of Health (May 2012) indicate there were 721 people in NZ being treated for hep C in 2009, 578 in 2010 and 478 in 2011.

The NZ AIDS Epidemiology Group reported on 8 March 2012 that in 2011 there were 109 people newly diagnosed with HIV in NZ. Group director of the NZ AIDS Epidemiology Group, Otago University associate professor Nigel Dickson, said that a recent Auckland study had found about 20 per cent of a sample of gay and bisexual men with HIV were unaware of their HIV status.

If such men, unaware that they are infected with HIV and/or hep C, are both sexually active, promiscuous and fail to wear a condom during sexual activity, there is a real risk of both diseases being transmitted to their male partners (and in the case of bisexual men, being passed to both their male and female sex partners). Because the HIV virus is unable to be detected by blood tests until about 3-4 weeks after infection, men who have sex with men (MSM) are prohibited from donating blood if they have engaged in anal sex or oral sex, with or without a condom, at any time in the five year period prior to donating blood.

Data from PHARMAC showed the number of people in NZ receiving subsidised antiretroviral treatment (ART) for HIV rose from 1348 at the end of June 2010, to 1518 at the end of June 2011. Of those 80 per cent were males, and 20 per cent were females. It was estimated, 1603 people would have been on ART at the end of 2011.

With the recent passing of a bill by the NZ government legalising same sex marriage (SSM), opponents of the bill are predicting a rise in the numbers of people being treated for HIV/AIDS and other STDs prevalent among MSM.

On 1 December 2011 The NZ Herald reported that 3474 Kiwis had been diagnosed with HIV since it first appeared and about 680 of them have developed AIDS and died. Jane Bruning, director of a national support network for Kiwis affected by HIV, was reported as saying that somewhere between 1800 and 2500 people were living with HIV. She said there are hundreds more who have the virus but don’t know it. And others who won’t admit they’re infected (confirming Nigel Dickson’s assessment noted earlier).

Sexual transmission of hepatitis C was thought to be rare but recently there have been increases in the number of transmissions attributed to sex among “gay” men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) in Australia, particularly men living with HIV.

These increases have also been reported in numerous locations overseas, including in the United Kingdom, Europe, and North America.

Rodney Peter Croome AM is an Australian LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) rights activist and academic who currently serves as the spokesperson for the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group, and is National Convenor of the Australian Marriage Equality. He has accused the Australian Red Cross Blood Services of “homophobia” for having a policy that refuses to allow men who have sex with men (MSM) to donate blood. In the light of data provided above it is obvious why it is imperative that Red Cross ignore the fallacious, vexatious and defamatory accusations made by “gay” lobbyists such as Croome.

Further Reading

The Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations (AFAO), has produced a website (http://www.thenewdeal.org.au/) designed to provide gay men with information about:

  • sexual transmission of hepatitis C and how to prevent it,
  • testing for and treatment of hepatitis C
  • information about HIV and hepatitis C co-infection.

AFAO President, Willie Rowe, points out why the website is needed: “With the recent increases in gay men getting hep C through sex, it is important they are informed about the risks and what they can do to address them.”

Hepatitis C is a significant health issue in its own right but there are particular health concerns for people living with HIV.

Robert Mitchell, President of the National Association of People with HIV Australia (NAPWHA) explains why this information is important for HIV-positive men: “Having both HIV and hep C can have serious impacts on the health of HIV-positive people. It can make treating both viruses more difficult and can also increase the progression of hep C and liver disease.”

Mike Butler: The gay-marriage self-parody

April 20, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The phrase “gay rights for nuclear-free whales” quite accurately parodies the shallow, trendy, bumper-sticker campaigns of the New Zealand left. Shallow trendiness dominated parliament this week as Labour MP Louisa Wall’s Marriage (Definition of Marriage Bill) Amendment Bill passed its third reading 77 votes to 44.

Customs Minister Maurice Williamson promised the sky would not cave in, which was obvious since figures from New Zealand’s 2006 census show that same-sex couples make up fewer than 1 percent of all couples in New Zealand. The numbers of homosexual men living together reached 0.3 percent in 2006, while the number of homosexual women cohabiting made up 0.4 percent of all couples living together.

A total of 3516 female couples and 2655 male couples lived together in 2006, compared with 867,696 couples of the opposite sex. In 2011, of all homosexual couples living together, 232 couples entered into a civil union, with 133 of them women.

To what extent did this shallow, trendy, bumper-sticker campaign clog up parliament? Some indication came from the time it took for MPs to reply to the email I sent to all on August 28 last year. Labour MP Lianne Dalziel replied in March this year while National MP Nicky Wagner replied on April 16.

The Health Risks of ‘Gay’ Sex

April 10, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

“The Health Risks of Gay Sex” by John R. Diggs, Jr., M.D.

“As a physician, it is my duty to assess behaviors for their impact on health and wellbeing. When something is beneficial, such as exercise, good nutrition, or adequate sleep, it is my duty to recommend it. Likewise, when something is harmful, such as smoking, overeating, alcohol or drug abuse, and homosexual sex, it is my duty to discourage it.”

“The Health Risks of Gay Sex” by John R. Diggs, Jr., M.D. Corporate Resource Council (2002). This resource is available here  in pdf format:

http://catholiceducation.org/articles/homosexuality/healthrisksSSA.pdf

Dr. John R. Diggs, Jr., is a practicing Internist with first-hand experience in treating many of the problems described in this paper. He also travels and lectures on a variety of medical topics to audiences around the world.

John R. Diggs, Jr., MD is a board-certified Internist who has put his medical training and 15-plus years of clinical experience to work in developing a series of messages advocating the sanctity of human life and the proven benefits of sexual restraint. His central theme: Overwhelming scientific evidence supports the inherently reasonable and, at one time, universally held belief that sex belongs exclusively inside marriage.

The costs of sexual libertinism are much higher than the well-publicized devastation of the AIDS epidemic. Using the research skills and clinical expertise of a seasoned physician, Dr. Diggs exposes the real-world effects of sexual permissiveness through a message that is logical, consistent, coherent and inspiring. It leads lay persons and professionals to seek the best in themselves and their children. Parents are energized to fulfill their primary role in the education of their children. Teachers are relieved to discover their limited responsibilities in the area of sex education and their larger duty to honor the moral and ethical prerogatives of parents. Civic leaders are encouraged to find that their gut-instincts about the importance of civic virtue actually coincide with the most up-to-date findings in medicine. Businessmen learn of the costly effects of sexual immorality on the lives of their employees and on businesses themselves. Doctors have even commented that they will change their manner of practicing medicine because of the information that is presented by Dr. Diggs.

Whether they are received by medical professionals, church audiences, civic associations or corporate communities, Dr. Diggs’s presentations lead listeners to greater respect for one another and for the power of the human sexual faculty, correctly channeled. Consequently, listeners gain new clarity and hope regarding problems ranging from adolescent pregnancy to sexual addiction, pornography and male-female relations in the workplace. The quick wit and humor that Dr. Diggs injects in his presentations does not blur the bright line of truth that courses through the message.

In addition to a appearing before a variety of professional conferences, churches, high school and collegiate audiences, Dr. Diggs has published numerous essays and articles for local and national print media. He has appeared on more than 100 local and national radio programs — including the “Dr. Laura” Schlessinger show — and television venues such as MSNBC, national Fox News and “The O’Reilly Factor.”

Dr. Diggs has been married for more than a decade and is the beaming father of 3 children.

Syphilis ‘back with vengeance’ among Christchurch’s young homosexual community

March 9, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Syphilis fuelled by iPhone applications such as Grindr have “come back with a vengeance” among Christchurch’s young homosexual community.

Sexual health physicians say the Government needs to take immediate action before the infection spreads into the heterosexual community, where it has the potential to claim the lives of unborn children.

Source: http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/8402842/Syphilis-back-with-a-vengeance

Christchurch fielded a fourfold increase in infectious syphilis from 2011 to last year and so far this year 16 people have been treated for syphilis at the city’s Sexual Health Centre – with six of those infectious.

Canterbury District Health Board Sexual Health Centre physician Dr Heather Young said sexual health was “one of the most neglected hospital specialties” in New Zealand.

“If there is no specific action taken, it [syphilis] has the potential for rapid spread and I fear we will be just sitting here watching a train wreck,” Young said.

Infectious syphilis waned in Christchurch late last year but had “come back with a vengeance” this year.

Because government funding does not cover most sexually transmitted infections (STI), treatment rests with regional health boards.

Syphilis has been on the increase in New Zealand since 2003, with a rise of more than 193 per cent of cases between 2004 and 2006.

Rates peaked in Christchurch last year, Young said.

Not only did the number of cases leap from seven in 2011 to 28 last year, but the average age and way that men were contracting the infection also changed dramatically.

Most men who caught syphilis in 2011 were in their mid-40s and contracted the disease at sex-on-site venues, such as brothels.

However, last year the median age dropped to 26, with some sufferers as young as 19. It was most commonly caught after the use of social media or iPhone applications such as Grindr, Boy Ahoy and NZ Dating, Young said.

“The highest number of people contracting infectious syphilis is men having sex with men and many are using social media sites or smartphones to search for sexual partners.”

The applications enabled men to meet “anywhere safe and convenient” for casual sex.

Young knew some patients who used Grindr and had had more than 50 sexual partners in three months. Others did not even know the name of their last partner.

It wasn’t until a patient showed Young how the application worked that she realised “the ease of sexual partner acquisition”.

“I didn’t truly understand it until I saw it. About 50 people popped up in the immediate vicinity with directions on how to access them,” she said.

“People can access sexual partners with the greatest freedom they have ever had now.”

One of the big concerns was syphilis’ potential to spread into the heterosexual community where it can be transferred from mother to baby during pregnancy.

Congenital syphilis could result in miscarriages, still births and abnormalities in babies, she said.

Many other developed countries are also experiencing a rise of syphilis cases, but have already introduced measures to halt its spread.

“Syphilis should be a top priority [for the Government] because it’s got serious consequences,” Young said.

Dr Ed Coughlan, clinical director of the Sexual Health Centre, said the issue was “very concerning”.

Coughlan urged the community to have regular sexual health checkups.

Doctors around the city had been alerted and an advertising campaign was being published on Facebook and in homosexual magazines, he said.

Coughlan and Christchurch medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink have also written a joint report to the Ministry of Health, urging the Government to initiate a national response with Pink calling for a “nationally co-ordinated approach”.

“We have texting, Facebook and Twitter and many ways in which we as a society are more connected but it is very important for us to realise that despite our advances in technology, these diseases are still prevalent in our community and they do pose a risk,” he said.

“We cannot take it lightly and we have to act appropriately.”

“Pockets” of the outbreak had flared up in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland and Pink said if nothing was done to contain the infection it would only be a matter of time before it went national.

The Government has identified sexual health as a “key work area” in its 2010-2013 Statement of Intent.

Ministry of Health chief medical officer Dr Don Mackie said the Government invested about $55 million in sexual and reproduction health services through ministry contracts and district health board provider agreements every year.

Environmental Science and Research also carries out STI surveillance on behalf of the ministry.
