Drug-resistant sex diseases now ‘endemic’

September 26, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Sexually transmitted diseases [STDs] brought under control last century could be coming back as new strains find ways to cheat antibiotic treatments, a report warns.

Research published in the New Zealand Medical Journal today charts the changing face of drug-resistant disease during the past two decades, and found resistance to a raft of infections has become “endemic”.

In Australia and Sweden, strains of gonorrhoea have become untreatable – a problem labelled an “urgent threat” by the United States Centres for Disease Control.

No-one has a true picture of infection rates in New Zealand because sexually transmitted infections, except Aids, are non-notifiable and monitoring is done voluntarily, mainly when people go to the doctor with symptoms.

High rate of chlamydia in teens

June 26, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Staggeringly high” rates of chlamydia have been reported among New Zealand teenage girls.

A report by Environmental Science and Research (ESR) was the first time data was collated from every laboratory in the country on people tested, as well as the number of new sexually transmitted infection (STI) cases found.

It found 5064 cases of chlamydia per 100,000 population in teenage girls aged 15 and over.

This was a “staggeringly high” rate, the report authors said.

Because only six per cent of teenage boys were tested for STIs, compared to 35 per cent of teenage girls, the real number of men with chlamydia was likely higher. [Read more…]

Judge says “It’s important that people understand that the trade in pornography must be stopped…”

April 25, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A Hamilton judge has labelled a man’s collection of “extreme” sex videos the worst he has encountered in his 37-year legal career.

So bad was the “disgusting” collection – which featured torture, bondage, bestiality and child rape, Judge Robert Spear said a deterrent message had to be sent to others that may follow David Robert Miles‘ “curiosity”, and sentenced him to 13 months’ jail.

“The videos portrayed what might loosely be described as pornography at its most gross level. It involved sex offending involving very young children; it involved bestiality and torture.

“I have to tell you that with some 37 years of appearing or presiding over criminal courts and having to deal with cases of this nature, this is without question the most disgusting material that I have ever had to deal with. [Read more…]

Explicit sex class divides school

February 28, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A school trustee has quit and a family withdrawn their child in protest at an explicit sexual education programme at a West Coast primary.

Blaketown School trustee Jo-Anne Sim resigned this month over the “unacceptable” and explicit class, delivered to Year 7 and 8 pupils in December.

Ms Sim said the children were told about oral and anal sex, flavoured condoms, and pleasure points – despite parents being told in writing beforehand that pupils would be taught only the basics.

“Eleven, 12 and 13-year-olds don’t need to know this stuff. That’s why we’re mad,” said mother-of-two Ms Sim.

Her daughter told her some children had their hands over their ears because they were uncomfortable with the lesson.

“They were too scared to say ‘we don’t want to hear this.”‘
