Film and Video Labelling Body – censorship and charity

October 31, 2011 by SPCS Leave a Comment

The Film and Video Labelling body (“FVLB”), like the Society for Promotion of Community Standards Inc (“SPCS”), is constituted as an incorporated society under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. Like the Society, which is a registered charity (registered with the Charities Commission on 17/12/2007 Reg. No. CC20268); it too is a registered charity (registered 28/01/2008 Reg. No. CC20715).

For many years the FVLB was headed by Mr William (Bill) Hood, with whom the SPCS had regular contact. He retired as FVLB committee member and executive secretary on 31/01/2011. Ms Sharon Rhodes has taken over his leadership role.

The gross income of the FVLB for “service provision” for the financial year ended 31/12/2010 was $1,504,338, according to financial records it registered with the Charities Commission (www.charities.govt.nz). From this income, $588,376 was absorbed in salaries and wages.

The FVLB employs five persons full time and two part-time  to achieve its “service provision” and the total hours worked by “all employees” per week is 262 hours (equivalent to 6.55 full time persons). Each full time equivalent employee receives on average an annual remuneration package of about $90,000 per annum.

The FVLB has been registered as a charity by the Commission on the basis that its purpose it to serve “some other public benefit” to society ( it does NOT qualify as a charity on the basis that it fulfils any one of more of the remaining three charitable purpose categories:  relief of poverty, advancement of education or adavancement of religion). (Note: The SPCS qualifies as a charity for its “advancement of public welfare” or “public well-being”, which are terms recognised in law). [Read more…]

Porn king Steve Crow’s assets and bankruptcy considerations

August 26, 2010 by SPCS Leave a Comment

PORN KING’S ASSETS. The Sydney Morning Herald 26 August 2010

The Kiwi porn baron Steve Crow has said he would consider bankruptcy in a bid to get a major Australian supplier of sex toys and DVDs off his back. Crow, who defended himself in the High Court in Auckland yesterday is challenging a judgment of $39,000 owed to Calvista Australia. Calvista says it’s owed for goods supplied to Crow’s companies in New Zealand. Crow said Calvista had revived an old Vixen Direct account – one of his companies – after no dealings with him for six years. The Dominion Post reports that Crow, who is behind the annual Boobs on Bikes parade and Erotica Expo, was this year banned from directing or managing a company for four years. ”I do not have $39,000 in a bank account. I have assets many, many times that,” Crow said. ”The only issue is if I’m unsuccessful in this appeal … I would have to liquidate assets. The other choice is to bankrupt myself.”

Checketts McKay Law, John M Carr, Steve Crow and Liquidated Porn

March 2, 2010 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A hardcore porn company Z4K74D (In Liq) – formerly called Vixen Direct Ltd and directed by NZ “Porn King” Steve Crow owed unsecured creditors $262,528 and the IRD $163,550 when put into liquidation on 27 May 2009. It has been unable to pay unsecured creditor Checketts McKay Law of Cromwell (Alan Bevin McKay of 35 The Mall, Cromwell 9342) for legal sevices rendered. The law firm was listed by the Liquidators, Chartered Accountants Meltzer Mason Heath, as one of 50 odd unsecured creditors who would receive nothing from the failed porn company. Mr Alan McKay is currently the Attorney who acts for San Antonio Texas-based company director John M. Carr whose companies are the subject of ongoing investigations by the National Enforcement Unit (N.E.U.) of the NZ Companies Office. John Malcolm Carr (see photo links below) co-directs porn companies Eden Digital Ltd and CVC Group Ltd with Steve Crow. Among his many colourful business interests Crow owns 50% of the shares in 435 Devon Limited that owns the former troubled RSA Clubrooms in New Plymouth.
