Comments: The Society for Promotion of Community Standards applauds Nick Willis for his courage in exposing the harms of pornography. Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ, a registered charity, in a media release issued today says it takes ‘a real man’’ to have the honesty to front up to the harm porn does. He points out that pornography leads to addictions, broken marriages, increased sexual violence, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking and prostitution. “Nick’s honesty and bravery will be the catalyst for a national conversation of the harm of pornography and will hopefully be an incentive for other men who struggle to seek help” says McCoskrie.

Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis told the Herald on Sunday that the strength of his wife helped him beat an addiction threatening their relationship and his ability to be a father. SPCS applauds Nick’s wife of eight years, Sierra Willis, for helping him break free from his addiction..

The Stages of Pornography Addiction

By Gene McConnell and Keith Campbell

Five Stages of Addiction

  1. Early exposure.
  2. Addiction.
  3. Escalation.
  4. Desensitization.
  5. Acting out sexually.

Quote: “Other men aren’t so lucky. I realize now that with just a little push, I could have gone over the edge. I could have raped that woman and then killed her to cover my tracks. That’s how Ted Bundy got started. When the porn he was addicted to wasn’t enough anymore, he tried the real thing — rape, and then murder. When he succeeded, he did it again. And again. Pornography addiction is very serious”.

New Plymouth man Gary Timothy Fenwick sentenced for toilet filming

September 11, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Gary Timothy Fenwick, 45, was sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court after pleading guilty to secretly filming people in toilets.

A self-confessed porn addict and voyeur who secretly filmed people in toilets using hidden cameras has been revealed after losing a bid for permanent name suppression.

In the New Plymouth District Court Gary Timothy Fenwick pleaded guilty to two charges of making an intimate visual recording in July.

He has had interim name suppression since he first appeared in court.

The charges related to the 45-year-old setting up hidden cameras in the unisex toilets at two entertainment venues in New Plymouth……….

Judge Chris Sygrove said concerns raised by Fenwick about the impact on his wife if his name suppression was lifted and his identity made public did not meet the high threshold required.

“In my view the extreme hardship is not met,” Sygrove said.

He described the offending as “sick and depraved” and that it had involved a high level of planning.

Fenwick had also previously opposed a media application to record him in court.

Sygrove said there was no evidence that Fenwick had traded the images.

He had since been getting psychological help to address his issues.

Sygrove sentenced Fenwick to four months community detention, six months supervision and ordered him to do 100 hours of community work.

What is porn doing to the brain? Global authority on addiction examines impact of porn

October 31, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Having established, like the recent [UK] Children’s Commissioner report, that ‘basically, porn is everywhere’, we set out to discover what all this porn was doing to their brains. Was it having any effect at all? Could it be addictive?

We found Dr Valerie Voon, a neuroscientist at Cambridge University and a global authority on addiction.

Then, in the first study of its kind, we recruited 19 heavy porn users who felt their habit was out of control and had Dr Voon examine their brain activity as they watched, among other things, hardcore porn.

She showed them a variety of images, both stills and videos.

These ranged from images known to excite all men, such as bundles of £50 notes and extreme sports in action, to mundane landscapes and wallpapers – all inter-spliced with hardcore porn videos, plus pictures of both clothed and naked women.

The ways in which their brains responded to this diverse imagery were compared with the responses of a group of healthy volunteers.

She was interested in a particular brain region called the ventral striatum – the ‘reward centre’ – where our sense of pleasure is produced. This is one of the areas where an addict will show a heightened response to visual representations of their addiction – whether it’s a syringe or a bottle of vodka.

What we discovered was a revelation. When shown porn, the reward centre of normal volunteers barely reacted, but that of the compulsive porn users lit up like a Christmas tree.

The compulsive porn users’ brains showed clear parallels with those with substance addictions.
Everybody on the project was astounded, even Dr Voon, who admitted she had been ‘sceptical and ambivalent’ about the study at the outset.

If porn does have the insidious power to be addictive, then letting our children consume it freely via the internet is like leaving heroin lying around the house, or handing out vodka at the school gates. And this toxic effect is filtering down directly into young girls’ lives.
