Studies Link Porn to Sexual Violence – Family First NZ Media Release

January 7, 2016 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Family First NZ says that a new study<http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jcom.12201/abstract> out of Indiana University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa has warned that porn consumption is significantly linked to increases in sexual aggression.

“The latest research is a meta-analysis assessing 22 different studies from seven different countries around the world. This research found that internationally the consumption of pornography was associated significantly with both verbal and physical aggression, among males and females alike. This study should be taken seriously in New Zealand as we tackle unacceptable rates of sexual violence and the ‘roastbusters’ mentality,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

The study “A Meta-Analysis of Pornography Consumption and Actual Acts of Sexual Aggression in General Population Studies” published in the Journal of Communication found that “….the association for physical sexual aggression, although smaller than the association for verbal sexual aggression, was still positive and significant. Pornography consumption was associated with an increased probability of the use or threat of force to obtain sex.” [Read more…]

My Kitchen Rules contestant’s racy photos a ‘lesson’

November 12, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A story about her racy past being brought up seven years after the fact, has been “the worst possible thing” for one half of the Remuera sisters duo eliminated from My Kitchen Rules NZ last night.

Katrina Dunlop and Natasha Gorrie were described by fellow contestants as the snobby sisters from Auckland in this season of the cooking show, but failed to make the cut and were eliminated in last night’s episode.

On Sunday, a story broke that revealed Katrina Dunlop, 27, had been paid to pose in hundreds of hardcore pornographic photos seven years ago, published in the explicit porn magazine NZX and on the pay-to view website NZX Online,

Having bought a house at the age of 20, she was strapped for cash and took the porn photo job.

She did three saucy porn shoots, at various Auckland locations under the name K*Leigh, posing alongside another woman in a beach setting, Fairfax reported.

It is understood TVNZ did not know about the hardcore porn photographs until late last week and don’t screen for such things when interviewing contestants.

It was really hard to have that dragged up,” an emotional Katrina said.

“I was so naive, I was 20. To have it dragged up at this time is the worst possible thing.”

She hoped it would help young women understand the permanency of photos on the internet.

“I hope it could be a lesson for young girls, whatever you do when you’re young it can come back to bit you, even years down the track.”

Natasha supported her sister, saying the photos should have stayed in the past.

“It was so long ago, she’s changed a lot since then as a human being.”

Speaking about the competition, Natasha said the sisters really thought they could win.

They had studied and practiced recipes between eight and 10 hours each day in the lead up to the competition.

Kaikohe speaks out on sexual abuse of children

September 19, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

[Northern Advocate 19/09/15] A Kaikohe group campaigning against sexual violence is holding a rally next week to highlight the long-term harm caused by child sexual abuse.

The group is also considering a protest to coincide with Auckland’s “Boobs on Bikes” in October, saying the parade normalises pornography and could lead to more behaviour like that of the infamous Roast Busters.

Organiser Mike Shaw, a Kaikohe pastor, said next Thursday’s rally aimed to raise public awareness of “the death of childhood caused by sexual abuse”.

Marchers would carry a coffin down Broadway to make their point. Fifty people took part in an earlier march in July but he expected more this time.

Mr Shaw said a march would not change anything on its own but it would give a voice to the pain of sexual abuse survivors.

“And if people are talking about it, solutions and actions will be generated,” he said.

Already work was under way to provide Kaikohe schools with information about intervention and prevention of abuse, as well arranging support when survivors had the courage to speak out.

People were getting better at speaking out against domestic violence, thanks in part to the It’s Not OK campaign, but sexual abuse remained a “no-go zone”.

The as yet un-named group grew out of MP Kelvin Davis’ Massive hikoi against sexual violence earlier this year. Some group members are also considering protesting at Auckland’s Boobs on Bikes parade organised by porn tycoon Steve Crow.

Mr Shaw said the group was concerned that normalising pornography, and its easy availability on the internet, could lead to sexual offences among youth and more behaviour like that of the infamous Roast Busters, who bragged online about their sexual exploits with underage girls.

He believed children were copying what they saw online and that watching hardcore pornography was warping the views of some youth as to what was acceptable behaviour. [Read more…]

Does watching porn really turn people into violent criminals? – The Telegraph

September 18, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Does porn make men and boys more likely to commit violent acts? It’s a question that psychologists and criminologists seem unable to answer, says Martin Daubney

Does pornography have the corrosive power to turn normal, everyday men into murderers or rapists?

It’s one of the most contentious questions of our time, and one that resurfaces every time a high-profile murder case hits the front pages where internet porn has cast its dark shadow over causality.

That happened again this week when Lord Thomas, the Lord Chief Justice, gave evidence to MPs, looking back on his conviction of “pervert” Jamie Reynolds, who murdered Georgia Williams, 17. The 23-year-old had been watching extreme pornography immediately before Georgia arrived at his home, where he proceeded to hang her in May 2013.

Lord Thomas said the case “left me in no doubt at all that the peddling of pornography on the internet had a dramatic effect on the individual.

“What is available to download and to see is simply horrific and it played a real part in the way in which this particular murder was carried out.”
