New Plymouth man Gary Timothy Fenwick sentenced for toilet filming

Gary Timothy Fenwick, 45, was sentenced in the New Plymouth District Court after pleading guilty to secretly filming people in toilets.

A self-confessed porn addict and voyeur who secretly filmed people in toilets using hidden cameras has been revealed after losing a bid for permanent name suppression.

In the New Plymouth District Court Gary Timothy Fenwick pleaded guilty to two charges of making an intimate visual recording in July.

He has had interim name suppression since he first appeared in court.

The charges related to the 45-year-old setting up hidden cameras in the unisex toilets at two entertainment venues in New Plymouth……….

Judge Chris Sygrove said concerns raised by Fenwick about the impact on his wife if his name suppression was lifted and his identity made public did not meet the high threshold required.

“In my view the extreme hardship is not met,” Sygrove said.

He described the offending as “sick and depraved” and that it had involved a high level of planning.

Fenwick had also previously opposed a media application to record him in court.

Sygrove said there was no evidence that Fenwick had traded the images.

He had since been getting psychological help to address his issues.

Sygrove sentenced Fenwick to four months community detention, six months supervision and ordered him to do 100 hours of community work.

Porn and video game addicts risk ‘masculinity crisis,’ says Stanford professor

Men who play video games “in excess” and watch online porn are facing what has been called a masculinity crisis, according to a leading US psychologist.

For those who think online video games and porn are passive online activities that have no real consequences in the real world, take heed.

Psychologist Philip Zimbardo interviewed 20,000 young people in the United States, 75 percent of them male, and found that excessive, solitary playing of video games and watching porn is seriously damaging the social development of young men.

“Our focus is on young men who play video games to excess, and do it in social isolation – they are alone in their room,” Zimbardo, who just released a book on the subject, entitled“Man (Dis)Connected,” told the BBC in an interview.

“Now, with freely available pornography – which is unique in history – they are combining playing video games, and as a break, watching on average, two hours of pornography a week.”

Protecting our children from porn’s ‘pattern of harm’

Heather Knox provides advice on how to educate your sons how to avoid the harmful physical abuse that access to porn leads to:

* Show boys how healthy relationships work – talk about partners in your whanau or community who show mutual respect.

* Demonstrate the concept of consent – when kids are playing wrestling or tickling games, make sure that the tickler/wrestler stops the first time they are asked to stop.

* Talk to boys about how they see relationships – is a girl a potential equal partner, or a conquest or prize to boast about?

* Brainstorm ways of dealing with rejection and disappointment – if she says “no” what can you do/say? Push her? Pressure her? Or say “ok, no worries! How about something else instead?”.

* Talk about how poor decisions affect both parties – when a boy pushes a girl around, she feels bad but he will also feel bad, maybe even guilty or ashamed, when he realises he has scared and hurt someone he likes.

How online porn is warping boys’ behaviour with girls

Sometimes you hear a story that is so awful, it refuses to leave your mind, no matter how fervently you beg it to go away. I was told one such story recently by a family doctor. Readers of a squeamish disposition, look away now.

I was having dinner with a group of women when the conversation moved on to how we could raise happy, well-balanced sons and daughters who are capable of forming meaningful relationships when internet pornography has changed the landscape of adolescence beyond recognition.

A couple of the women said they had forced themselves to have toe-curlingly embarrassing conversations with their teenagers on the subject. “I want my son to know that, despite what he might see on his laptop, there are things you don’t expect a girl to do on a first date, or a fifth date, or probably never,” said Jo.

A GP, let’s call her Sue, said: “I’m afraid things are much worse than people suspect.”
