New Zealand running star Nick Willis highlights plight of women and girls being exploited in pornography industry

March 7, 2016 by SPCS Leave a Comment

New Zealand running star Nick Willis shifted the focus of his shock admission to pornography addiction to “the women and girls” who are being exploited by the industry.

The 32-year-old Olympic silver medallist revealed at the weekend via his Facebook page that he had been “porn-free” for two and a half years.

The post received global attention given his status in athletics. “Porn makes you think you are having sexual needs met, but really they are hollow and leave you feeling empty and lonelier than before. Basically, pornography is a very unnatural (and very temporary) solution that people use to satisfy a natural desire. Pornography will not and cannot love you back,” Willis wrote.

On his Facebook page he provides a link to:

“Traffickers force girls into pornography for psychological control” and he adds:

“I think it is extremely important to shift the focus of this issue to the real victims, the women and girls who are being exploited because of the high demand for porn.

“Even if someone thinks there’s no harm for themselves in viewing a little porn here and there (despite the extensive research that refutes this), there are real victims being exploited to provide that viewing content.”

Couple make a public stance against the growing accessibility of porn in society.

March 6, 2016 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis has gone public about his addiction to pornography, which he says didn’t just affect him but also his family.

The 32-year-old runner says he has now been porn-free for two-and-a-half years, which he marked with a posting on his Facebook page, and it was an amazing feeling.

“Porn makes you think you are having sexual needs met, but really they are hollow and leave you feeling empty and lonelier than before,” he wrote.

Willis said he had started watching porn when he was a teenager and it “had been a rollercoaster ride of shame and justification”.

“Not until I realised the true implications this had on my marriage, and ability to father could I finally break free.”

Willis’ wife Sierra could take much of the credit for beating his addiction, he told the Herald on Sunday.

The couple had decided to make a public stance against the growing accessibility of porn in society.

Willis won the silver medal in the 1500m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and will compete again at the Rio De Janeiro Games this year.

Comments: The Society for Promotion of Community Standards applauds Nick Willis for his courage in exposing the harms of pornography. Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ, a registered charity, in a media release issued today says it takes ‘a real man’’ to have the honesty to front up to the harm porn does. He points out that pornography leads to addictions, broken marriages, increased sexual violence, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking and prostitution. “Nick’s honesty and bravery will be the catalyst for a national conversation of the harm of pornography and will hopefully be an incentive for other men who struggle to seek help” says McCoskrie.

Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis told the Herald on Sunday that the strength of his wife helped him beat an addiction threatening their relationship and his ability to be a father. SPCS applauds Nick’s wife of eight years, Sierra Willis, for helping him break free from his addiction..

Diet of porn leading the young to take risks: major British study

March 1, 2016 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Children are developing permissive attitudes to sex and viewing women as objects after being raised on a “diet of pornography”, a major British study has found.

For the first time, the Children’s Commissioner for England has found a clear link between exposure to extreme images at a young age and a rise in “risky behaviours”.

It emerged that children who regularly viewed pornography were more likely to have underage sex, develop “casual and hedonistic” attitudes, experiment with drink and drugs and indulge in sexting, when explicit pictures are taken and sent to others using camera phones.

Boys were much more likely to be exposed to pornography than girls, it was found, resulting in “beliefs that women are sex objects”.

Pornography addiction leads to same brain activity as alcoholism or drug abuse, study shows

February 29, 2016 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Cambridge University scientists reveal changes in brain for compulsive porn users which don’t occur in those with no such habit

People who are addicted to pornography show similar brain activity to alcoholics or drug addicts, a study has revealed.

MRI scans of test subjects who admitted to compulsive pornography use showed that the reward centres of the brain reacted to seeing explicit material in the same way as an alcoholic’s might on seeing a drinks advert.

The research by Cambridge University assessed the brain activity of 19 addictive pornography users against a control group of people who said they were not compulsive users.

Lead scientist Dr Valerie Voon, an honorary consultant neuropsychiatrist, told the Sunday Times: “We found greater activity in an area of the brain called the ventral striatum, which is a reward centre, involved in processing reward, motivation and pleasure.

“When an alcoholic sees an ad for a drink, their brain will light up in a certain way and they will be stimulated in a certain way. We are seeing this same kind of activity in users of pornography.”
