David Lane SPCS – In Defence of Special Creation – “Man made in the Image of God”

October 9, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

SPCS Constitution affirms “The Human person [MAN] is made in the Image of God” (Gen. 1:27).

According to French existentialist Jean Paul Sartre, the basic philosophic problem that faces us is the fact that ‘something’ – rather than nothing – exists. The questions immediately arise: “Has that ‘something’ always been there?” and “Where did all that ‘now is’ come from?” These are basic mysteries to modern man.

The Christian believes that the answers to these questions have been truthfully communicated to mankind by God, primarily through the Bible, but also through the ‘book of nature’. God is author of both and they complement each other.

Scripture informs us that the truths concerning the existence and character of God have always been self-evident to mankind through the book of nature, even to the ungodly and unrighteous – those “who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them; because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that they are without any excuse.”1

The active suppression of the truth of God’s existence and his role as Creator and Sustainer of all things is implicit to the atheistic and agnostic mindset, and to all philosophies such as secular humanism and materialism that derive from these religious positions. Mankind’s increasing knowledge of the wonders of the natural world should drive the unbeliever to acknowledge the self-evident fact of God as Creator, but unbelievers choose not to believe, in spite of the overwhelming evidence. As Scripture states: “The fool has said in his heart ‘There is no God'”.2 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools”,3 exchanging the truth about God for a lie.

Drug-rape CRITIC – edited by Holly Walker – banned at Otago University, Dunedin

October 8, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Holly Walker, who served as a Green Party List MP from 2011-2014, but failed to retain her seat in the New Zealand parliamentary election held on 20 September 2014, studied at the University of Otago from 2001, graduating with a BA (Hons) in English and Politics.

In 2005 she was the editor of the Otago University student magazine Critic Te Arohi, the year’s winner of the Aotearoa Student Press Association’s award for Best Student Publication. In September 2005 Critic’s annual “Offensive Issue” included a fictionalised diary of a man who used drugs to stupefy and rape women. The Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), headed by then Chief Censor Bill Hastings, banned the issue in early 2006, soon after Walker’s tenure as editor had ended. At the time of the ban she said the article was “defendable in that it highlights a very important issue“, but when Critic interviewed her in 2012 she called it “a mistake to publish that particular article the way that we did“.

The Society for Promotion of Community Standards Inc. applied to the Chief Censor Bill Hastings in 2005, to be granted leave” to have the magazine classified by his Office. He did not grant SPCS “leave” but instead acted on on an application from the NZ Police to have the magazine classified. Nevertheless, the Society, as an “interested party” was invited by Hastings to make a written submission to the OFLC, which it did, arguing that the Critic publication should be ruled “objectionable” (and as a consequence banned). SPCS was successful in having it banned.

To read the SPCS submission which destroys Holly Walker’s ‘defence’ of the indefensible “objectionable” date-rape publication, go to:

Facebook page accused of fuelling sexual abuse at Otago University – shut down

October 8, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A male-only Facebook page sharing photos of naked woman at Otago University and rating them has been shut down.

The “Rack Appreciation Society” page has prompted a battle of the sexes with female students starting their own awareness page title “Rake Appreciation Awareness”.

“Very, very explicit photos that were shown… left nothing to the imagination,” says Kate Buchanan of Rake Appreciation Awareness.

The page had up to 4000 followers before a group of girls found out about the site.

ONE News spoke to a 20-year-old student who says photos of herself had been posted on the page without her consent.

“They obviously thought it was a joke but it was pretty disgusting considering the caption said ‘rape’ which is pretty intense,” says the student who did not want to named.

Rape Crisis in Dunedin say they’ve received a worrying amount of calls from girls about the page.

“We’re talking about sexual abuse here. What is happening is sexual abuse,” says spokesperson Di Smith. [Read more…]

Harmful Digital Communications Bill

October 7, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

In June 2014, Parliament’s Justice and Electoral Select Committee reported back to Parliament on the Harmful Digital Communications Bill introduced last year and recommended amendments to toughen up the legislation.

The recommendations included a higher maximum penalty for the new offence of “causing harm by posting a digital communication” to be raised from three months in jail, or a $2000 fine, to two years in jail. This would bring the sentence in line with other harassment offences.

“…we recommend amending subclause 18(2) to provide for a maximum penalty for an individual of six months’ imprisonment or a $5,000 fine, and $20,000 for a body corporate; and amending subclause 19(3) to increase the maximum penalty for an individual to two years’ imprisonment…. We would like to emphasise that the penalties we propose are maximum penalties; a Judge would impose a sentence proportionate to the nature of the offending in each case.” (Committee Report – Commentary on proposed amendments to the Bill)

University of Canterbury law professor Ursula Cheer said individuals targeted online could pursue civil action on the grounds of defamation. [Read more…]
