MASSIVE sexual violence rally in Kaikohe

September 19, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Victims, ex-abusers and supporters stomped down the street to say sexual abuse is not ok.

The MASSIVE sexual violence march aimed to break the silence and raise awareness on Kaikohe’s Broadway July 23.

Supporter and survivor of sexual violence Judy Mihaka says it is prolific in our communities.

She says it’s something many people in her generation of baby boomers have experienced.

“All my friends, everyone I know has been molested in some way.”

She says the first step of the journey for rehabilitation, for both victim and abuser, is to admit it.

“It’s a hard thing for someone to put their hand up and get up in front of strangers and say ‘I did this’.”

Stop Demand, Korowai T?manako and the Riders against teenage suicide were involved in the rally and the whole community was invited, Kaikohe community leader Mike Shaw says. Even the Plunket van joined the march.

Slavery on NZ seas: rape, bonded labour and abuse widespread on fishing boats

May 26, 2015 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Indonesian fishermen working on boats in New Zealand waters face slave-like conditions, violence and sexual abuse, a report says.

The Auckland University research, based on interviews with 300 fishermen, found they were forced to work days on end, with shifts ranging from 16 to 53 hours for as little as 49 cents an hour. They faced physical violence and debt entrapment.

Facebook page accused of fuelling sexual abuse at Otago University – shut down

October 8, 2014 by SPCS Leave a Comment

A male-only Facebook page sharing photos of naked woman at Otago University and rating them has been shut down.

The “Rack Appreciation Society” page has prompted a battle of the sexes with female students starting their own awareness page title “Rake Appreciation Awareness”.

“Very, very explicit photos that were shown… left nothing to the imagination,” says Kate Buchanan of Rake Appreciation Awareness.

The page had up to 4000 followers before a group of girls found out about the site.

ONE News spoke to a 20-year-old student who says photos of herself had been posted on the page without her consent.

“They obviously thought it was a joke but it was pretty disgusting considering the caption said ‘rape’ which is pretty intense,” says the student who did not want to named.

Rape Crisis in Dunedin say they’ve received a worrying amount of calls from girls about the page.

“We’re talking about sexual abuse here. What is happening is sexual abuse,” says spokesperson Di Smith. [Read more…]

More kids committing sexual abuse due to easy access to hardcore porn

July 8, 2013 by SPCS Leave a Comment

Easy access to increasingly hardcore pornography and the sexualisation of childhood are being blamed for a rise in the number of children sexually abusing each other.

Growing numbers of children and teenagers are committing acts of sexual abuse against other children every year, with some as young as 11 being prosecuted for sexual offences.

Experts are calling for compulsory cyber-education programmes in all schools from primary level to stem the impact of explicit material.

Ministry of Justice figures received under the Official Information Act show that, since 2008, there have been 1299 prosecutions for sexual offences brought against young people under the age of 18.

This has risen steadily over the past five years, with 314 prosecutions last year compared to 204 in 2008. These are for offences ranging from rape to indecent assault and sexual grooming, with victims, both male and female, under the age of 16.

The youngest offender was 11. Only one of the offenders was a girl. Police say the jump in prosecutions was due to better knowledge and increased reporting of sexual abuse, rather than a rise in incidents.
